Measuring Tips
- • Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring
- • Keep feet flat on the floor, back supported
- • Place cuff on bare upper arm, aligned with heart level
- • Don't talk during measurement
- • Measure at the same time each day
- • Take 2–3 readings, 1 minute apart, and log the average
- • Avoid caffeine, exercise, and smoking 30 min before
Understanding Your Numbers
Systolic (top number) measures pressure when your heart beats. Diastolic (bottom number) measures pressure between beats.
Blood pressure varies throughout the day. It's typically lower during sleep and rises in the morning. Stress, physical activity, and diet all affect readings.
A single high reading doesn't mean hypertension. Consistently elevated readings over multiple days warrant a doctor consultation.
When to Seek Help
- • Readings consistently above 140/90 mmHg
- • Any reading above 180/110 — seek immediate medical attention
- • Symptoms: severe headache, chest pain, vision problems, difficulty breathing
- • Significant change from your usual readings
Healthy Habits
- • Reduce sodium intake (<2,300 mg/day)
- • Regular exercise (150 min/week moderate activity)
- • Maintain healthy weight
- • Limit alcohol consumption
- • Manage stress through relaxation techniques
- • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains (DASH diet)
